The Goddess Inanna, called Ishtar in the epic of Gilgamesh, is the goddess of love - NOT marriage.  She is sensual & sexually adventurous.  She is also, thanks to her visit to the underworld where her sister Ereshkigal reigns, able to descend into the underworlds & come back - a feat no other god or goddess in her pantheon could do.  This is also why she is associated with Venus. Inanna and her sister Ereshkigal are, in many respects, two sides of the same coin - one for fertility, and one for death - mutually necessary.
